2023-2024 Lessons

At Des Moines and Henry County Ag in the Classroom, we offer a range of lessons to implement within K-12 curriculum. Below you will find the list of 2023-2024 lessons available for classroom visit or resource tote. If you would like to sign up for monthly visits, click the button below!

Bees as Pollinators: K

Students will understand the importance of bees and the basics of pollination. *30 minutes

Apples and Pumpkins: K

Students will explore the lifecycles and traits of apples and pumpkins. *30 minutes

Bag Butterfly: K

This lesson introduces students to the importance and beauty of pollinators with a fun craft. *30 minutes

Farm Animals and their Babies: K-1

Students will compare the physical similarities and differences of farm animal adults and their offspring. They will also identify the correct names of common farm animals and match the picture of an adult with the baby. *30-40 minutes

The Very Hungry Iowa Caterpillar: K-2

Students will discover the plants and animals grown on farms in Iowa through an agriculture spin on a familiar book. *45 miniutes

We all Scream for Ice Cream: K-2

Students will be able to understand the journey of dairy products, like ice cream, and use sequencing skills to make their own. *45 minutes

Turkeys: Farm to Fork: K-2

Students will gain a better understanding of a turkey, the turkey farmer, and the lifecycle of a turkey. *30 minutes

Creating Healthy Meals: K-2

Students will be able to identify food groups and healthy food options. *45 minutes

Seed Germination Necklaces: K-2

Students will observe corn or soybean seeds as they germinate and compare how they are similar and different. *30 minutes

Apple Chain: K-3

Earth Bracelets: 1-2

Students will learn the process from seed to apple while creating a visual display. *30 minutes

This lesson helps students recognize the important resources our Planet Earth provides us. *30 minutes

My Little Seed House: 1-2

Students observe the growth and development of seeds and explore what conditions are necessary for seeds to germinate. *30 minutes

Discover Christmas Trees: K-2 and 3-5

Students will explore the history of the Christmas tree, explain the lifecycle of a conifer, and discover what it's like to work on a Christmas tree farm. *30 minutes

Amazing Beef Cow: K-2 & 3-5

Agriculture BINGO: 3-5

Students will explore the lifecycle of beef cows, demonstrate the importance of calf identification and learn about different beef products.

Students will be familiarized with the importance of agriculture and how it touches their everyday lives. *45 minutes

Garden in a Glove: 3-5

Students will be able to describe the germination process of a seed and list what a seed needs to grow. *30 minutes

Pumpkins aren't just for Carving!: 3-5

Students will lean about the lifecycle of the pumpkin, the pumpkin industry, and make pumpkin pie in a bag. *60 minutes

Throw and Grow: 3-5

Students will learn more about the importance of pollinators as well as seed germination and plant growth. *30 minutes

A Day without Agriculture: 3-5

Students explore the wide scope of agriculture, identify the variety of agricultural products they use in their daily lives, and discuss the differences between wants and needs. *45 minutes

Gumdrops-The Story of Sugar: 3-5

Students will learn where sugar comes from and make a fun treat. *30 minutes

What's in My Tootsie Roll?: 3-5

Students will research the nutrition label of a Tootsie Roll® to determine where the ingredients originated. *30 minutes
